World War II Tunnels in Fremantle.
On Sunday morning before boarding the ship in late afternoon, we traveled by Uber to the World War II Tunnels. They were located outside of Fremantle high above the city. We walked through a winding path, higher and higher to reach the tour office.
Following the outbreak of WWII and the fall of Singapore to Japan, the Australian government decided they needed to reinforce their defenses for their port of Fremantle. In little over a year the Tunnels were built. Luckily the Germans ships or submarines never made it to the port. None of the guns were ever fired at an enemy. They were only fired for practice.
For more than an hour we travelled through many of the tunnels and learned about life under ground. Mostly men and four women lived in the Tunnels. The women worked in communications. The men handled and prepared the ammunitions. Our guide was a humanities teacher and provided us with many interesting stories.
Following our tour, we went back to Fremantle to tour the Round House. It was a small prison located in town by the sea. Suzie tried to do some geo caching there. She found the spot but someone had taken the item that was to be left behind. We had a great conversation with the guides that volunteered at the round house. Suzie was locked into the ball and chain to see how the prisoners were handled. John was given a ball to hold to try to lessen the number of thrashing a prisoner would endure as punishment. One less thrashing for every minute you would hold the ball with your hand as your arm was extended out straight.
We truly enjoyed our stay in Fremantle but now it was time to begin our adventure on the Sun Princess. Rose and Suzie were amazed how fast we could board the ship with around 800 people who were there trying to board. In less than ten minutes we were in our cabins thanks to our black card and elite status!
Looks nice and warm there. The tunnels look very I tersting
