Today we visited the town of Broome Australia. It has a poulation of around 12,500 people and is located on the. Northwest coast of Western Australia. Broome is bordered by the Indian Ocean and lies about 1300 miles from Indonesia. Today's temperature was 99 with extremely high humidity . Lucky for us it was a cloudy day. Broome is known as the Pearl of the North because it has led the industry in the production of South Sea Pearls.
We visited the Sun Picture theater which was 100 years old and the first cinema in Western Australia. This theater was partially indoors and partially outdoors. We can't imagine watching a movie in all this heat.
After walking around in the small town, all of us headed to Cable Beach. Fiery red ochre cliffs, sparkling colbalt blue water, and shimmering white sand have made this 13 mile stretch world famous. Suzie and I rode a camel on a 30 minute caravan along a perfectly flat beach that is washed clean every day by the massive tides. John and Rose were our photographers and had lots of laughs watching us get up on the camels. They laughed even harder when we tried to dismount them. It was extremely bumpy and we had a crazy aggressive male camel. I found the camel to be much wider than I expected. Trying to walk after getting off the camel was a sight to see!
It was a great day and one we won't forget. We were tired, sore, and exhausted as we returned to the ship. We are so glad we now have two more sea days to rest up before visiting Darwin. Tomorrow I'll be in the pool because temperatures will be 100+ and John will spend the day in the Horizon, enjoying the air conditioning and reading his book. This is definitely one adventure we won't forget!
